Prestwich gives green light to town centre revamp

Bury Council has given the go-ahead to plans to regenerate the town centre in a positive step to reinvigorate the heart of Prestwich village. At a Planning Committee Meeting, Councillors voted unanimously to support the plans and awarded outline consent to developers Hollins Murray Group Ltd (HMG).

The regeneration scheme will bring vast improvements to facilities currently available including a new, relocated library and health centre, upgraded highways and parking facilities and at the request of Bury Council, a safer and more direct access route to Prestwich Metrolink station. The retail space will be heavily modernised and the plans also incorporate a number of flats, aimed towards young professionals and families, which will create a sustainable living space within easy reach of the Metro and sources of employment.

HMG Chief Executive, Nick Casson said, “We are delighted with the outcome and look forward to putting our plans into action. Planning policy is very much geared towards the support of town centres and HMG has put a lot of effort into delivering a proposal which meets the needs of the local community. The Council congratulated HMG on the level of public consultation it has undertaken and we are particularly thrilled that so many key opinion leaders in and around the village have been so supportive of our plans.”

Manchester based, HOW Planning provided extensive planning and retail advice for the 2.8 hectare scheme which has been designed by Liverpool based Craig Foster Architects.

Says Jon Suckley, Principal at HOW Planning: “The current shopping centre is outdated and ineffectual and the plans for the new scheme will provide the people of Prestwich with a modern and attractive town centre facility. All the advice is in line with the Love Prestwich Village Development Strategy that has been put together by the Council.”
